Hello all, 

 

We have a glass & brittle plastics register, but in doing our internal audit, a question regarding trucks and hysters has come up.  Hysters are continuously in the plant, in and out of scope areas.  We have two scope areas where trucks pull in to load, which is about 30 minutes.  I don't want to create more work for our operators by having them check every light, window, gauge and mirrors on the trucks when they enter and before they leave.  

 

Is this something anyone else has dealt with, and if so, how do you manage those items?

We include our owned trucks and hysters in our normal pre-op and on the registers.

for OSHA purposes, you need to have a forklift inspection.   Add those items to that checklist.   

 

or add it to the register and complete the check on the same frequency as the other items.

As Glenn and kingstudruler1 have indicated I normally have these on a pre-op checklist, keeps things simple.

Our drivers sign off every morning on a fork truck inspection, but the actual glass and plastic checks on the forklifts (and all other listed glass or brittle plastic in the facility) is handled during the monthly self inspection done by the FSTL and random members of the HACCP teamm.

Make sure the glass and plastic of those Hysters is on your main register.  Adding a G&BP check to your daily OSHA checklist is plenty (so long as your SOP and training is that forklift operators follow your reporting procedure for cracked or broken items).  If they're checked on the daily, rechecking on your monthly QA audit is optional in my mind, but it looks better to ensure QA has eyes on it during that check.
