Hi Everyone,

I really need some help. I could not find any clear information on the internet or regulations. we are making frozen meat products.

It is stated '' once defrosted, do not refreeze' on consumer pack labels.

However my manager wants to print different information  on the box label. '' once defrosted use within 7 days ''.

We did shelf shelf studies.  But I am not sure if we can print two different information. if we can Does it affect my HACCP system ? or Do I need to do anything for BRC audit ? I have never done this before do not know how to approach this.

if you could advise, that would be great.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

The correct one should be - "once defrosted use within 7 days, do not refreeze".

I would avoid two different labelling as this may cause confusion, is your packaging pre-printed?

Not sure about Ireland but in the USA, you would be fine saying once defrosted, use within 7 days instead of the other statement. Or saying both.

No change to the HACCP plan required either. We have SQF, this would not affect it either. Not sure about BRC but I doubt it.

Can you just make a combined statement 'once defrosted, do not refreeze AND use within 7 days'?

Combine the statement, just ensure you have SL trials (in triplicate) to cover the SL defrost and micro state after the 7 days.

I would also add, Store 0-8°.

It wont affected HACCP as this is already in the scope, you just need to VERFIY the VALIDATION on an annual basis the same as "cooking instructions"
