BRC 4.15.1 - Raw Material on Floor

Best Answer , 13 November 2023 - 01:47 PM

Hi Magda; Yes, it's the same for everything: raw materials, packaging materials, work in progress, and finished products. Can you make some kind of a "small pallet" or stand, something to keep it off the floor?

Hello

During the recent inspection, QA marked us for putting materials on the floor during dispensing. The operator takes the required sealed bags of material from the pallet and puts them on the floor next to the scale for the second operator to weigh them. From the scale, they are going back on the floor to be open and the operator empties the bag into the hopper. There is a sieve on the hopper.

There is absolutely no room for a table or additional pallet in the weighing area (small cleanroom).

Clause 4.15.1 says to keep rm off the floor during storage. Is it the same for in-use?

Thank you for your comments.

Thanks so much, guys. I guess we will be hanging up hammocks :) as there is no available room at the moment. We will be looking at redesigning the area or maybe drip-feeding the process with smaller quantities.

Many thanks again.

Your hammock suggestion was in jest, but yes, suspend it from above if floor space specifically is unavailable.  We move 1000# ingredient containers around this way regularly.

Your health & safety manager will probably be happy to see less manual repetitive lifting too.

We ran into the same issue. Packers setting boxes on the floor for lack of table space. We started keeping a supply of clean tie sheets (sheets with bad print) in the area and have them put one on the floor under the box. It's interesting that you have room to sit them on the floor next to the scale but there's not enough room to add some kind of stand there? Not having seen the area though, it's hard to understand.
