BRCGS Clause 5.6.7 Test Methods and Samples - Physical or Electronic

Clause 5.6.7:

Test methods, analytical methods and customer-approved reference samples (where required) shall be of the most recent version and be available in the laboratory or where off-line testing is conducted. Samples shall be suitably stored to avoid degradation.

My question is does the sample need to be physical samples or can it be an electronic picture of the samples that's stored in the computer system?

You always need retained samples of your product up to at least the best by date.  If there is a customer complaint or recall you will need to be able to retest retained samples.
