SQF Requirements - Sun Drying Product
Hello,
We have a product that we receive from farmers, wash, and then allow to dry in the sun outside on drying racks. Would this be acceptable for SQF certification? Which module would it fall under?
We are currently preparing for our facility to be certified under food manufacturing of dried goods but I am not sure if this process would fall under primary plant production or not, since it is fresh.
Any advise is appreciated.
hmmm a little more info would be helpful
Obvs you're getting a raw ag commodity that you are then drying
then what----do you cook/process in any way? or just package and ship? are you targeting a moisture content from drying before you can release the product--are you checking for mold
as far as what sqf module would apply----best to reach out to the certifying body you plan on using and ask them
You did not say what food item it is, however - we have an operation in Panama that dries tomatoes an Rambutan's under the sun along with coffee beans.
They are going to go for SQF Certification - under modules 2 and 11.
The only catch is that you need to do a risk analysis and explain (documented) how you ensure the items being drye do not become contaminated such as from bird droppings and insects, or birds landing an eating your food items.

Thank you! Its a dried plant/ herb. We only drip dry to get as much water off as possible prior to repacking, no moisture checks done before shipping. Process is monitored while product is drying. I figured a risk assessment showing low risk would be all we need.
Ill communicate with our certifying body and make sure 2 and 11, which we have in place, are all we need.
Thanks!
Can it not mold in transit or prior to purchase?
I'd be checking for mold or at least what if's.
Also you will need to figure out what FSC's you have too, its not just modules.
