Receiving Area- Ground Level
Hi IFSQN Community,
We are a small company and we took over an existing building that we converted to a manufacturing facility. One area that we cannot alter is the Receiving area, which is ground level, no dock leveler, and the truck is not able to back in due to space constraint.
I would like to reach out if there is anyone on the group that has a similar situation and what controls do you have in place to mitigate the risks. Since the materials need to be unloaded outside, we are wondering if we can address the inability to unload the product inside the premise by placing a tarp on each pallet to be unloaded from the truck outside the building. We have an unideal situation and would like to see how other similar facilities operate.

Can you elaborate a little as to the type of product/raw material/process involved ?

The type of product would be frozen fruits and vegetables that will be processed by drying.
Finished product will be shelf stable low moisture product for snacking.
We need to be creative in addressing the designated receiving area which was not originally designed for this purpose.

I had a similar situation with a previous company I worked for. We manufactured and packaged snack foods. We added a loading platform and ramp to receive the materials into the warehouse area. Prior to adding the platform we would have one employee with a pallet jack bring each pallet forward, an employee driving the forklift to remove each pallet from the truck and an additional employee to count and inspect against the BOL. The extra man power and effort was costly. The company is located in NY and the weather (especially in the winter) would make these deliveries difficult at times. They temporarily added a "car port" to keep the pallets from getting wet or damaged due to the elements, it helped significantly.
It was also helpful during our audit to have a completed risk assessment to support our receiving practices.

Refrigerated trucks ? environment temperature ? Separation Distance ?
For refrigerated product, I have also encountered similar to Post 4 with environment at 35degC. Temperature/time control not so simple.
Possible ?

I appreciate the response. We believe that we are not the only company having such issue. Those are good inputs to help us come up with a better solution.
