Coconut Oil Storage and Prep

I need some help figuring out our coconut oil prep. We have it delivered in 400lb drums, then heated with a drum warmer, then pumped out into the weight we need/batch, then it is added to the batch. The problem is that we have to add it into the batch when it is softened, not liquid. What temp would be best for this? We have had to heat it to pump out of the drum, then put it in the fridge to harden to what we need. Any advice?

I've used a lab grade warming plate before and it worked beautifully

 

Depending on quantity, you could also try a heat wrap (like you'd use on your back)

 

It doesn't take much heat at all to soften coconut oil----either suggestion allows you to control temp

 

Oh, a plant starter mat may work as well, but they don't usually have control switches, but they are cleanable

We use shortening instead of oil, and we have a 'hot house' just outside production that holds all our shortenings.  It's not really hot, just above room temperature, just enough to keep the shortenings soft for the mixers.  Works beautifully.

You'll have to experiment.  Does the drum warmer allow you to set a temperature?  If so, you will just have to test it at various temperatures until you get it softened to the consistency you want.

 

If you can't set the temperature you will have to do it based on time and do the same thing.  Monitor it until it is at your desired consistency and confirm the time it takes, along with the temperature it is at.
