Does every position including material ordering require an SOP?

Or do we only need SOP's for manufacturing?

Hi SQFC,

jd presumably = job description

I assume "manufacturing" includes all QA/Engg/etc  functions also.

I assume" jd" replaces "SOP" (semantically illogical terminology).

We developed a simple SOP for purchasing since it involves the purchase of raw materials and items used in manufacturing. Mostly because these items must be purchased from approved suppliers and sometimes it involves a decision making process that needs to be followed to prevent inadvertent introduction of unwanted contaminants. Most of our procedures for purchasing, sales, product development etc. are fairly short and simple or cover the necessary then point to another already existing procedure for the details. Job descriptions can be a part of that too but could be either very lengthy or incomplete. You got this! Good Luck.

HI Karlieheath,

In my opinion YES, each department in manufacturing should have an SOP. Purchase, Maintenance, QA/QC, Production, Stores, Dispatch including Human Resource.

Job description for each position outlines what that person will be doing.

An SOP explains how the various tasks for that position are done.

An SOP may fall under more than one job description, for example, cleaning machines.

Oh MY GOODNESS - I miss-read the original posting on the same day that I was working on setting up a plant with job descriptions, my oops and thanks for catching it Charles!
