Stainless steel tanks labels that are changeable
All,
We have stainless steel tanks in food manufacturing. We do have different products at same time. We do require moving tanks through out day. So if when we have more then 3 products then we have hard time to keep track of tanks. All tanks look like same. Right now we apply label but it can come off and go in product.
So, Is anybody have idea how to label tanks which require changing label all time and washable also.

I've seen metal signs that are hung off the tank on chains, like a necklace. Because they are stamped stainless steel, they can be sanitized as needed. Most tanks have some sort of hook or tube which the chain can be looped around or over, and if not, perhaps a sign could be welded on?

I don't think people would worry about the ink, they are all equally safe (or unsafe). But maybe some other people here on the forums know better, so I await their comments. If I could, I would make sure each sign was stamped with a different letter or number, and also had space to write.
Does this specifically need to be on the tanks themselves?
We have a master log of what is (and has been) in any tank at any given time, so there is an easy single reference point for what is where.
What about numbering system? Have you tried giving number to each tank and record in your log which number corresponds to which batch/ product. Numbering can be done permanently on tanks or by radium sticker.
May try to use chinagraph pencil / grease pencil to write label on tank surface.
Number your tanks and use a log or have a reference on a board somewhere. No one's asked and I'm not sure, but do you have a PLC system for process control with a screen that shows the tanks? If so, best bet is to utilize the PLC system for tank tagging and number the tanks. If additional communication is needed then use a whiteboard for reference.
I'm assuming your record keeping can keep traceability if you have this system setup?
Permanent numbering options include using an engraver to mark stainless (https://www.grainger...g!439044756658!) the pro here being that anyone can use one, it's fast, easy and permanent. Cons are that it's still hard to see compared to a sign, and you risk creating deep uncleanable gouges that could harbor biofilms. Depending on where they are they may or may not be a big deal, but it's a potential microbial concern.
The other common option is to use filler material from a mig or tig welder (preferably tig for a smoother finished weld). Takes someone who can use the equipment, but permanent, easy to read, and smooth good welds will not have the harborage concerns above.
