Has anyone ever experienced printed date code labeling rubbing off?

Has anyone ever experienced printed date code labeling rubbing off?  We package our product in a film Low linear density polyethiline and use Ink jet printers from Markem Image.

 

Just recently we have been getting complaints of the dates seemingly rubbing off.......we have changed ink and done everything immaginable to fix the issue.....we also cannot replicate the complaint with retention samples we have in our lab.

 

Wondering if anyone has experienced this issue.

which level is telling you the dates come off?  At distribution or retail?

What is the product that you are packaging?  Refrigerated or ambient?

we used to print codes on packaging for a customer similar to what it sounds like you are doing, I do remember getting a complaint one time for codes rubbing off but not often, If printing codes is something you guys are going to be doing a lot invest in a rub tester and set up a test procedure.

We are packaging rice in Low linear density polyethylene.  The complaint is coming from Corporate QA......I rode myself to a DC Monday to check a load and found no issues.  We also developed an approved SOP and validated it by testing on a weight scale using 15 lbs of pressure and rubbing the bags together 15 times with no issues.  I have found that you "CAN" rub the dates off  but dang near have to rub through the packaging...….we are now researching a carbon based ink.....

OK thanks - so my next question is... in what region are the dc'a located aMD could your product ever be loaded onto refrigerated trucks for delivery to final destination?

We have shiped to the west coast, which had issues, and central (Dallas)  that "had issues".....samples that had issues were overnighted to QA in central US

If you are referring to ribbon printing, we did experience similar issue.
We change the ink supplier then the issue is solved.

I've experienced this issue and had the same reaction.  :uhm:

After running around in circles, I discovered the operator sped up the machine just a bit, but enough to impact contact and drying time.  

 

Have you explored other possibilities and narrowed it down to the ink? 

It could be related to a faulty lot of film, age of the ink, lapse in PM, product / process changes, or humidity issues within the facility.
