In produce wholesale is weekly restroom cleaning ok?
Hello, i work at a produce wholesale and wanted to know if having weekly restroom cleaning acceptable? We have someone come in and clean once a week but the restroom are maintained during the week if needed.
We do not have a sanitation employee... employees clean up at the end of their shift or as needed.
Hi There fsfqp
This really depends on structure/layout of the area & how clean/tidy your workforce are.
Some factories I have worked in the restooms really have needed a daily clean (looking at the condition of them on day 3 where I would have been embarrassed to show an auditor these areas).
"Clean as you go" is wonderful democratic, but often optimistic concept. Unfortunately in my experience it rarely works in practise as there is zero accountability for an area.
However if your weekly GMP audits show a good condition between cleans this would be a good justification for the frequency you suggest.
We are a small facility and the bathrooms get cleaned only once a week while maintained as needed. More than that would be overkill for us. Like Lesley said, if they look fine then once a week is fine.
This also depends on your auditing scheme. Our scheme specifies daily. This is done by an employee at the end of their shift and documented.
As stated above, it depends on your scheme and also the number of employees. If your bathrooms constantly need "touching up" by employees during the week, then you may have too large a workforce for weekly cleaning. I also agree with Lesley... it's better to specifically assign the responsibility to specific personnel rather than allowing the employees to judge when it needs to be clean. If there's one thing I've learned in personnel management, it's that even the most astute employees won't automatically assume responsibility for a task if it's not specifically assigned to them.
