SQF Backup/Designate requirements
Hey everyone,
Just a quick question:
So, I know the SQFP has to be full time, but does the SQF's back up position also have to be full time?
Here's my scenario:
We have two companies producing the same type of food. Each company is its own entity, but we work closely together.
I have a backup SQFP at my facility for when I'm absent, but the SQFP at the other facility does not have a backup.
Can I be the back up SQFP at the other facility, if I work there 2 days a week (and whenever they call me)?
Alternately, can the same person be the SQFP at both facilities, as long as they're employed full time at both, and have back up at both?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks!
YES!!! I was just on a webinar mid year review provided by SQFI, what they are looking for is that say you are on vacation, and your back up gets sick, that someone is available to provide the answers and documents the auditor requires. A couple of people asked a version of your question today.
Yes, it may take longer and be a bit more painful, but it will also demonstrate management commitment to the code

So, are you saying that the same person CAN be the SQFP at both farms, if they're employed full time at both and have necessary back ups?
Or is it yes, the back-up also needs to be full time? Just trying to clarify.
Also, would you happen to have a link to that webinar recording? I'd be interested in seeing it so I can get more info.
Thanks so much for your super speedy response, Scampi!
I will post the link once I have it!!!
Yes, at both farms, but I would also make sure you have a 3rd person who could muddle through an audit if need be
Where in Canada are you, just curious lol I'm in Ontario
If two separate entities but under the same company the answer can be YES if the key SQF Practitioner is the regional overseer.
Be clearly defined on this one in writing so that your Auditor does not mess up on this one.
We have several clients that use 1 SQF Practitioner that is the regional for multiple locations with each one having a backup on-site that works full time and is knowledgable, HACCP qualified, etc.
Scampi, I'm in Ontario too!
Thanks for your help! I couldn't find enough detailed info to find the answer to that one on my own.
I know there needs to be a full time SQFP for each location of a company, but it doesn't specify whether or not that SQFP can be the same person,
So thanks again.
the webinar also said we don't have to call ourselves that!!! Whew, i must prefer food safety specialist lol, it's also more indicative of my job.....i don't practice SQF, i run a haccp based system. But my background is federally registered poultry, so after that, everything's easy peasy lol
You're welcome Evelynn

Ok, now what if they're two separate companies, not under the same company?
Oh that's a sticky wicket!
Two separate companies - not under the same company = primary and secondary SQF Practitioners at both companies.
Would the auditor know? The auditor can't tell you how to define your back up.....but like I said, you still need a 3rd for each site (worst case scenario)
Sticky wicket!! Love it

Hahaha!
Well both farms generally get the same auditor, so he'd definitely know, but I wonder if I should check with my CB to ask about it. I don't know.

SQFconsultant with the save! Thanks!
I want to point out that SQF does not make any stipulations regarding a back up/s
What it does require is that someone who understands the code and the facility is available to assist during the audit in your absence
I would reach out to the CB to be sure, but I wouldn't make to much of it
Who's your CB?

NSF is our CB
Ah, i just switched after too many mess ups on their part to count. When you email, ask specifically for Michael Hayes, and put a timeline for your response or you may be waiting weeks to get an answer
