Use and Storage of Wash Down Hoses
Started by Mike Mahon, Jan 16 2017 04:04 PM
Can I get some clarification regarding the use and storage of wash down hoses please:
- Must be food grade - got it.
- Cannot be stored on the floor - got it.
Need clarification on the rest:
- Can you use a hose reel?
- What kind of hose reel?
- Is the reel mounted on the wall?
- Using hose real does that allow for water to drain out?
- Do you leave the nozzle on or take it off?
- Does the hose need to be strung along a wall to properly drain?
- Help
I can't really seem to find the answers in any of the codes, but may not be looking in the right place either.
Thanks

My facility is SQF Certified and we use Stainless Steel Hose reels on two lines (all others are drop down hoses). They were made for us by a contractor.
All lines have back-flow prevention devices so it satisfies our auditors.
Hope this is helpful.
Sabina,
- Yes you can use a hose reel.
- My facility has mounted them on the roof i-beams. I would not hang them directly over equipment as the hose can inadvertently drip into your mixing equipment. You should also mount a cutoff near each hose reel in case the hose should burst it will be easier to stop the flow of water.
- The hose will have a nozzle on the end and that will not allow water to drain as it is really a food grade garden hose.
- Leave the nozzle on
