Hi all,

We are beverage canning industry and we conduct our own microbiological test. We would like to know if there is any difference between the TGE yeast agar and the TGE meat extract agar. Is there any significant difference in the test result between the 2 TGE?

Thank you.

Hi ati,

What are you measuring ? plate count ?

Dear Charles.C,

We are measuring thermophilic.

We believe the composition is the same except for the extract.

Hi ati,

Sorry, canned beverages (and thermophilic procedures) not my area.

Currently, APHA specifies Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar (contains beef extract) for the heterotrophic plate count procedure in testing bottled water

Standard Methods Agar is equivalent to the formulation of Plate Count Agar (Tryptone Glucose Yeast Agar) as listed in Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater , 19th ed., AOAC, and USP. (1-4) The American Public Health Association (APHA) recommends use of the medium for performing the "standard plate count" on dairy products. (6)

Both are used for plate count measurements but as to whether their results will be significantly different, no idea.

For comparing count data, normally  recommended to use the same procedure.
