SQF Management of Pests and Vermin Guidance
Greetings,
With reference to Management of Pests and Vermin in SQF, I am looking to find additional reference or guidance on SQF requirements on the following please:-
- Distance to be maintained between baits, traps etc. - Exterior and Interior locations
- Recommended Minimum Frequency for their Monitoring.
I am specifically looking to find details for Storage and Distribution Centers (warehouses). In AIB's Distribution Center standard, some of these aspects are clearly spelt out. Unfortunately, I am unable to locate similar information when it comes to SQF, even in the Module 11 Auditing Guidance document posted on the SQFI's website.
Looking for your help on this, if there are other SQF resources that I can use to address above.
Your experience and guidance will be much appreciated.
Regards,
agasr
I do not believe SQF spells it out. You may have customer requirements that specify pest device and monitoring which would then fall under customer requirements element of SQF. Using a standard such as AIB that does spell it out may be a good, reasoned (defensible) place to start and something you can defend in your audit.
It all comes down to this: whatever you do must be effective, validated, verified, and monitored with specific criteria (and documented). Vague, I know, but a pest control company with solid experience in food facilities and audits can help out a lot.

Along with RMAV's comments, if you are using a commercial PCO, they should have a QA department that can conduct a pest risk accessment. IPM to be put into place would then be based on the results of that assessment.
I have attached the latest recommendations from the National Pest Manangement Association (NMPA). These are from 2013, but i beleive they are working on an update. It has some specifics that may be helpful.

If the intent is to handle all pest control in house you will need to follow the general guidelines as noted in sqf code 7.2 manual.
Better yet, contract with a good pco such as Orkin, they are SQF compliant.
Hi Agasr,
I think previous posters have covered the SQF aspect. AIB are far hotter on pest control and if you are AIB compliant I am sure that you would meet SQF requirements.
Kind regards,
Tony
Thanks for all your response, greatly appreciate your inputs.
I feel much better and clearer about it now.
