Hi, Friends

Any one tell the procedure for Thermometer calibration (In house) with Record templates

Thanks for yr query.

Please supply a little more info.

Can you inform which temperatures, or range of temperatures, you intend to measure ?

Thanks / Charles.C

Hi,

Basic three point calibration check attached the key is to have a reference probe which has been calibrated and which is certified, we tend to buy a new one every year of the same type as our other probes but which comes with a certificate, as its cheaper then buying a "true" reference probe and sending one off to be calibrated. So long as you only use the reference probe for calibrating the other probes its fine.

Hi,

I had what I believed to be a thorough calibration check procedure and actual calibration procedure placed in the supporting documentation section of our HACCP plans. The inspector who reviewed our HACCP plan found fault because it was not the manufacturer's recommended procedure for the brand of the temperature measurement device in use. When she found fault I was able to find resources on the manufacturer's website for the proper procedures for calibration check, for calibration and for re-certification of the device.

I assume a thermocouple instrument (TC).

I suggest that if A is the approx. intended temperature of target (assumed to be capable of providing adequate probe contact) then for –

(a) A = 0.0degC, you need some melting, ice-water, a thermos flask /sop1 and you can calibrate yourself.

(b) A = 100.0degC, you need some boiling water/steam/ sop2 and you can calibrate yourself.

© 0 < A < 100 degC, you may need an externally (prob. annually) calibrated reference thermometer depending on the magnitude (A-0)degC or (100-A)degC and the sensitivity of the measurement. It is theoretically possible to invest in an electronic black box and do it yourself but most people seem to send the units out and get a nice, auditor-friendly, certificate.

(d) A <0 degC, similar comment to ©. I have occasionally tried to calibrate myself. Not recommended by me unless you are resistant to cold burn.

All the commercial TCs I have acquired have been stated to be set up at the ice-point by the manufacturer. I always buy zero-adjustable units although do not always use this capability.

IMEX, a calibration laboratory will ask you which specific cal. point you wish the unit to be fixed at (assuming it is adjustable) or whether to leave the set-up as is. The errors at the other requested cal. points (or at every point)  are then determined and reported. If you are lucky, (or perhaps have a high-grade TC), the errors may be within yr operational tolerance limits so you can assume the unit is “true” across the whole range. It  has rarely happened for me. The tolerance limit will logically depend on the intended use of the TC thermometer, eg at a CCP.

Note that you only need one “master” reference thermometer. This can be used to create sub-masters unless you have an unlimited budget.
