Lighting...appropriate levels

Is there are defined level for "appropriate intensity" when it comes to production areas?  I have a light meter that registers in lx.

The FDA Model Food Code requires 110 lux in areas with like walk in coolers, 220 lux inside equipment where people might clean and 550 lux for any areas where people work with knives, slicers, grinders or saws or any place employee safety is a factor.

SQF Guidance states:

'Lighting shall provide minimum lux (foot candle) intensity as prescribed by applicable legislation or in their absence, meet good manufacturing best practices appropriate to the commodity being processed. In general, processing and food handling areas are illuminated to a minimum intensity of 200 lux (18.58 ft.c.). Inspection areas require higher illumination; 500 lux (46.45 ft.c.) is generally recommended.'

Hi,

M&S require 500-600 lux in all high care/high risk areas including chillers.

The UK's Health & Safety Executive have also released a document on lighting requirements with LUX ratings for all industries. I have included this as an attachment.
