Hi, MFSC;

I can not definitively answer but would like to follow this topic as I'm working on a GFSI scheme to SQF.

Currently we test packaging traceability with mock recalls twice a year, and product mock recall twice a year.  Both requiring at least one class II or I.  Given that the SQF code (7.1) requires:

i. Finished product is traceable to the
customer (one up) and provides
traceability through the process to the
supplier and date of receipt of raw
materials, food contact packaging and
materials and other inputs (one back);

Whether or not an auditor targets primary packaging for a mock recall or finished product involving all inputs or both?  I don't know for sure, but I can insist that this is a good practice regardless.

Not sure what you are asking. However if you are asking is a recall plan required for packaging the answer is yes.  If you are asking if you are required to show proof/evidence of a mock recall, the answer would also be yes.

Thank you for that confirmation, Glenn.

Hi MFSC,

To add to the other points, SQF requirements vary with food sector category (FSC). Packaging falls under FSC 27 Manufacture of Food Sector Packaging Materials, applicable SQF Code Modules are Module 2: SQF System Elements and Module 13: Food Safety Fundamentals – Good Manufacturing Practices for Production of Food Packaging (GFSI Scope M).

Module 2: SQF System Elements is applicable to all organizations unless a clause is deemed as 'not applicable', however, there are 'Mandatory' elements which cannot be excluded. All sections of 2.6 Product Identification, Trace, Withdrawal and Recall are 'Mandatory' so applicable including:
2.6.1 Product Identification (M)
2.6.2 Product Trace (M)
2.6.3 Product Withdrawal and Recall (M)

Regards,

Tony

I've gone through 3 SQF audits and in the traceability exercise the auditors would pick a finished product either from your register or during a facility walkthrough, and "one up" (customer), one back" (supplier) traces on the raw materials (usually only one or two), finished product and food contact packaging materials were done.

I had one audit excerise, where the auditor as us to recall a lot of product packaging bottles. The bottles were use in 4 different product, ship to multiple customers. The possiblility of being asked to conduct a recall excerise  on packaging recalls is there. If your recall procedure are in order, this should not be an issue.

Our auditor always asks us to conduct a mock recall and it always includes packaging.
