Description: In October 2022, FSSC 22000 published the Guideline for Environmental Monitoring. CLARIFICATION:

For clarity, Foundation FSSC revised their requirement on Environmental Monitoring (Part 2, Section 2.5.7 of the Scheme V5.1) in September 2022. This revision was included within the Board of Stakeholders (BoS) Decision List that was updated based on the decision made by the BoS on 27th of September 2022. The revised requirement removed the term “Allergens”, and the following is indicated in the latest BoS Decision List:

In Part 2 of the Scheme, clause 2.5.7, the current wording shall be replaced with the following:

The organization shall have in place:

a) A risk-based environmental monitoring program;
b) A documented procedure for the evaluation of the effectiveness of all controls on preventing contamination from the manufacturing environment and this shall include, at a minimum, the evaluation of microbiological controls present;
c) Data of the monitoring activities including regular trend analysis.

This updated requirement took effect from 1st of November 2022.

As per the Scheme V5.1, Part 2, Section 2.1: The Board of Stakeholders (BoS) Decision list is a document which contains decisions applicable to the FSSC 22000 Scheme. The decisions overrule or provide further clarification on existing Scheme rules and have to be implemented and applied within the defined transition period. The decision list is dynamic and can be adjusted by the BoS when deemed necessary.

The latest version of the Board of Stakeholders Decision List was published in December 2022, and is available for download from the FSSC website:

The Foundations requirement for allergen management is addressed under FSSC 22000 Additional Requirement 2.5.6, and therefore, although the reference to allergens was removed from 2.5.7, the Scheme still addresses allergen management and control measures to reduce or eliminate the risk of cross-contamination.
